Esoteric Exchange Tuesday 9-10 EST. Hostess Sister Scholar
The purpose of the show is to explore literature that is esoteric in nature. Esoteric is defined as information that is known by a few. We will discuss various issues found in these books and also share where one could buy them if they would like. I also will discuss esoteric DVDs as well and introduce listeners to artists who cover esoteric material in their work.
Little did she know when growing up in the rural south that her passion and prayers to help others would lead her all over the world doing what she only dreamed of as a country girl growing up in Hollow Rock, TN. Most would have thought that since her grandfather and grandmother both went to school to be teachers; and that her great-grandmother traveled the south as powerful orator and minister and lastly the fact that her mother a retired educator, now a consultant for one of America's leading literacy programs, Helena would have early on discovered her purpose. But like many youth, she steered away from that which she viewed as mundane or ordinary, and initially in her mind, teaching was quite mundane. Many are called few are chosen, Matthew 22.14. This verse explains with austere clarity the path on which Sister Scholar was divinely placed in 1996. In was in 1996 she completed her first BA in Communications and was asked to teach a developmental reading course for just a semester. She was granted a teaching assistantship via the Education Department at the University of TN. She simultaneously taught the course and worked on here M.Ed; however, at the end of the first year she actually finished enough credits to receive another BA in English. Since that year she has taught grades 7-12 and multiple college level courses. Each course she has taught in her 14 years in education she has designed emphasizing the test-taking skills necessary to pass not only standardized tests but also metacognitive skills necessary to lead productive lives. Sister Scholar completed her M.Ed in August 1999 at Christian Brothers University and later the same year received a fellowship to work on her doctorate in African Studies with an emphasis in education reform at Howard University. Not only has she taught in various levels and subject areas nationally, she has also taught in Europe and Africa. Professor Scholar served as a guest lecturer in Zimbabwe, Malawi, Tanzania and South Africa presenting the paper, Hip Hop, the Tie that Binds, which explored the global impact of Hip Hop music. All courses she has designed are African- centered while promoting a literacy skill set and high order thinking exercises that have proven effective in all subject areas not just language arts. She currently lives in Washington, DC where she is an Educational Specialist for non profit organizations, a Mentor Teacher for Office of State Superintendent for Education and a Developmental Reading instructor for PGCCC.
