Just About Books

w/ Cheryl Robinson

CHERYL ROBINSON has been a veteran broadcaster on radio and television throughout the years. She began at WMPP radio station in Chicago Heights, IL at age 16 with a Teen Talk Show and has worked in stations throughout the country in such cities as Albuquerque, Dayton, Denver, Sacramento, San Francisco and Washington.

In addition to being a broadcaster, Cheryl has created a successful career as a Writer-Editor, Author, Journalist and Lecturer. The award-winning author won her first writing contest at age 15 with a State Crime Prevention Essay in Indiana. Cheryl has been a journalist since her early teens-having been on the journalism staff in both high school and college. During the 1980's, she owned Big Beautiful Ladies' Newsletter and the Black Singles Magazine with the home office in Sacramento and later branching out to 19 other states. In 1989, her freelance writing became a full-time career. She began writing feature articles and later became a sportswriter and the Editor of Road and Recreation magazine, an Air Force journal of driving and recreational safety. In the early 1990's, she became the first female and the first African-American Editor for the Air Force.

While in southern California, she was a Feature Editor and Writer for the Precinct Reporter, a San Bernardino newspaper. While in northern California and Ohio, she was the host for a "Singles" radio talk show and in San Francisco, she was the host for a television talk show.

Later she began working with the African American and Indian communities at the cable television station in Albuquerque. She was chosen as the Editor for Proceedings magazine for the U.S. Coast Guard, the oldest military magazine still being printed. In this position, she was also the first African American Editor. In the early 2000's, Cheryl studied with Les Brown, the motivational speaker and he later endorsed her book. In 2003, Cheryl served as an intern with the Smithsonian Books and at the Veterans Administration Broadcast Center (cable television) in Washington, DC.

Throughout her career, Ms. Robinson has been the Editor of numerous magazines, newsletters and websites.

Cheryl's latest book, A Forgotten Negro League Star: A Personal Look at Al Burrows, was released in January 2004. When she talked to Al Burrows about the Negro League, it just all came together and Cheryl was inspired to write about baseball. In this book, Cheryl brings to light the subordination of black ball players by many whites who wanted to maintain the "white way of life" during an oppressive era in American history. It is an information-packed baseball book about Al Burrows, the Negro League and black baseball with facts, trivia and baseball history. Frank White, Kansas City Royals, endorsed the book. (To purchase copies autographed by Al Burrows, please email Cheryl.)

Last year, she was a featured author at the Smithsonian's Anacostia Museum Author Day program. And this year, she was a featured author at the Alexandria Black History Museum's Author's Showcase.

Cheryl's other works include: Lana's Dream, a children's book, which is a collaborative with Evangeline Morse and it is currently with the publisher. A book on Sickle Cell Disease, which is also a collaborative work with Judy Johnson, will be finished in 2005. In addition, Cheryl has two contemporary romance novels in the making.

Besides writing and reading, Cheryl's latest venture is the "Just About Books" weekly show right here on Harambee Radio that airs on Mondays at 9:00 PM. It is a talk show that focuses on the reading, writing and discussion of quality books, and it is a source of literary information for listeners throughout the world. Guests on the show include well-known personalities and ordinary people who are dedicated to books and writing. Cheryl Robinson uses her journalistic skills to deliver an appealing mixture of informational and entertaining forums every week on current and forthcoming books, as well as books of the past. In addition, listeners are encouraged to suggest books or share their personal bookshelves. There is an estimated 500,000 plus book clubs discussing books and these reading groups are attracting a great number of African Americans-potential listeners for the "Just About Books" show.

Cheryl is the owner of Creative Writing, a writing firm based in the Washington, DC area. Cheryl is a freelance writer and book lover from southern Maryland.

"I am committed to writing both fiction and non-fiction that provides an authentic portrait of life-and I love talking Just About Books."
