Host Akeem K. Jamal with Huey P. Newton Back In The Day Akeem K. Jamal is Minister of Information for the Afrikan National Reparations Alliance (ANRA) and co-founder of the Urban Scholar Learning Academy (USLA) based in Los Angeles California. He has been instrumental in organizing international conferences on reparations in Oakland, CA, Baltimore, MD, and Philadelphia, PA. Jamal was the principle organizer for the Los Angeles memorial for Huey P. Newton, slain leader of the Black Panther Party. He is an historian, lecturer, and activist. Also, he is a member of Sons and Daughters of Sankofa, South Central Study Group of Los Angeles, and the UNIA-ACL Harambee Division #369. Throughout his organizing efforts in Los Angeles, California, he has been fortunate to meet Dr. Earl Grant, an associate of Malcolm X, Dr. Theo Obenga, an associate of Cheikh Anta Diop, Dr. Henrik Clarke, Kathleen Cleaver, Dr Molefi Kete Asante, Ashra Kwesi, Emory Douglas, Senghor Baye, President General of UNIA, Huey P. Newton, and Kwame Toure. In 1972, Jamal became a member of the Youth Organization for Black Unity (YOBU) as well as developed an association with the Malcolm X Liberation University (MXLU) located in Greensboro, North Carolina while still a junior in college. As a YOBU organizer he provided logistical support to the African Liberation Support Committee (ALSC) under the leadership of Ron Washington, Owusu Sadaukai, and Sandi Smith. In 1973, he was sent to Chicago Illinois to organize the youth component for the African Liberation Day commemoration in conjunction with 30 other cities in which over 100,000 Afrikans participated around the country. In 1975, Jamal was elected to the Central Committee of the YOBU/ February First Movement (FFM) and he held that position until the summer of 1979. During this time, Jamal was responsible for overseeing the local YOBU chapter as well as teaching a university course on Afrikan history. Also, he organized the largest strike in the history of Quaker Oats which lasted well over 18 months. Jamal has had the pleasure of speaking at Malcolm X University in Chicago, Illinois, University of California Los Angeles, University of Southern California, University of Santa Barbara, San Monica College, and Southwest College in California, University of District Columbia, Howard University in Washington D.C, Sojourner-Douglass College in Baltimore, Maryland, and Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He has organized various campus events, youth conferences, and community programs from Oakland to Los Angeles, California as well as other cities around the country. Some of those presentations included sharing the platform with such notable speakers such as: Robert Allen, associate editor of the Black Scholar, Haki Madhubuti (aka Don Lee), Third World Press, Dr. Leonard Jefferies, ASCAC, and Joe Moabi of Pan Africanist Congress of Azania. Also, Jamal has participated in numerous forums including the Los Angeles Afrikan Holocaust Committee, Black Power Cartel, and the Chicano Moratorium Committee. Jamal has authored more than 60 articles on Afrikan history and the struggle for liberation of Afrikan people. As an Afrikan Internationalist, Jamal has worked tirelessly to bring revolutionary change and unity for oppressed Afrikan people’s struggle for self-government, self-reliance, and self-determination around the world.
